The Russian invasion and occupation of Ukraine that started in 2022 continued into the new year. In February, a series of powerful earthquakes killed at least 57,000 people in Turkey and Syria; this event was the fifth-deadliest earthquake of the 21st century.

United Nations has declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets.[1]
