الأمريكان Americans أو الشعب الأمريكي، هم مواطنو الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. تضم البلاد أشخاص من أصول قومية مختلفة. نتيجة لذلك، لا يتساوى الأمريكان في جنسيتهم وعرقيتهم، لكنهم يتساوون في المواطنة.[39] باستثناء الأمريكان الأصليون، فجميع الأمريكان بصفة عامة أو أسلافهم المهاجرون على مدار الخمسة قرون الماضية.[40] أيضاً، توجد مجموعات أخرى لم تهاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة لكنهم أصبحوا أمريكان بسبب التوسع الأمريكي في القرن 19. هذه المجموعات هي شعوب هاواي، پورتوريكو، گوام، وجزر الفلپين.

الأصول

إن تاريخ الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية يبدأ في قارة أوروبا قبل أن تعرف هناك أمريكا، وفي قارة أمريكا نفسها قبل أن يصلها الأوروبيون. ففي عهد كولومبوس كان الأوروبيون نشيطين، يسيرون بخطوات سريعة، حيث كانوا يكتشفون ويستكشفون العالم من جديد، واصلين إلى آفاق وأماكن بعيدة.

إن اكتشاف كولومبوس الرائع والمحير لأراض جديدة كان قد شجع الآخرين على الكشف، فمن إسبانيا والبرتغال، ومن فرنسا وإنجلترا وبعض الأمم الأوروبية الأخرى، اندفع كثير من المغامرين، الذين خاطروا بحياتهم، بأموالهم، وبسمعاتهم ، لكي يصبحوا أغنياء ويكونوا إمبراطوريات جديدة.[41]

أمريكا التي وجدوها كان يقطنها ملايين من الناس، ولكنهم كانوا متناثرين في قارتين، ولم يكن لدى هؤلاء الأمريكيين الأصليين السفر أو المعرفة العلمية التي تمكنهم من الوصول إلى أماكن أخرى، وهكذا فقد أصولهم الأوروبيون بعالم لم يكونوا يعرفونه من قبل. وما كان يعني بالنسبة للأوروبيين النجاح وتكوين إمبراطوريات، إنما كان يعني – بالنسبة للأمريكيين الأصليين – الصراع من أجل الحفاظ على أراضيهم وطريقة معيشتهم.

إن الآمال التي جلبها سكان (العالم القديم) إلى (العالم الجديد) – كانت متخلفة بقدر الاختلاف بين أممها وشعوبها: الطمع في الذهب أو حب المغامرة – حب العظمة أو شرف خدمة الحاكم – الهرب من ظلم حكومة جائرة – العبادةب الطريقة التي يرونها – الهرب من الفقر أو السجن – تكوين مزرعة يحلمون بها. وهنا البعض الذيحضر بدون أمل – إذ يستخدمون كعبيد في المزارع أو في المناجم والمطاحن. وبالتدريج، وخلال ما يقرب من المائتي عام، فقد صهرتهم الحياة في القارة الجديدة في بوتقة واحدة كونت منهم الشعب الأمريكي.
