ولد جيمس جونز في 19 ديسمبر, 1943 في مدينة كنساس, ميسوري. وكان ابنا لجيمس ال جونز اس آر, العسكري السابق في الجيش الأمريكي. وقضى سنواته الأولى في فرنسا, ثم عاد للولايات المتحدة ليلتحق بجامعة جورجتاون كلية الخدمة الخارجية, حيث حصل على البكالوريوس في العلوم وتخرج عام 1966. حونز, لعب في فريق جورجتاون هوياس للبيسبول.^[2]
