ويلفرد كانتويل سميث
ويلفرد كانتويل سميث Wilfred Cantwell Smith، (و. تورنتو، 21 يوليو 1916 - ت. 7 فبراير 2000)، هو أستاذ في مقارنة الأديان كندي، كان يعمل مدير مركز جامعة هارڤرد 1964-1973 لدراسة الديانات في العالم.ويعتبر من أكثر الشخصيات تأثيرا في هذا المجال في القرن الماضي. أثار عمله (المعنى ونهاية الدين) في عام 1962 جدلا واسعا لتشككه في صحة مفهوم الدين.

حياته المبكرة وعمله
درس اللغات الشرقية في جامعة تورنتو، حصل على الماجستير والدكتوراه في مجال دراسات الشرق الأدنى من جامعة پرنستون، متخصص في دراسة الإسلام وأوضاع العالم الإسلامي المعاصرة وأشهر كتبه في هذا المجال (الإسلام في العصر الحديث) عمل أستاذاً في جامعة هارڤرد وفي معهد الدراسات الإسلامية بجامعة مكگيل بكندا، قام بتدريس الدين الإسلامي بكلية نورمان المسيحية بمدينة لاهور بباكستان 1941م-1945، دعي للعمل أستاذاً زائراً في العديد من الجامعات، صدر له حديثا (1998م) عدة كتب منها (نماذج الإيمان حول العالم) وكتاب (الإيمان نظرة تاريخية) وكتاب (الإيمان والاعتقاد والفرق بينهما)
