تشارلز پروتيوس شتاينمتس

تشارلز پروتيوس شتاينمتس Charles Proteus Steinmetz (عاش 1865- 1923م). عالم رياضيات ومهندس، وُلد في ألمانيا. اشتهر بتطوير طريقة لحل المشكلات المتعلقة بدوائر التيار المناوب وبتجاربه حول البرق الصناعي. وبالرغم من الفقر وسوء الحظ السياسي والعاهة الجسدية المعوقة فقد استطاع أن يصير مهندسًا عبقريًا.

 النشأة

وُلد شتاينمتز في برسلاو بألمانيا (ڤروتسواف ـ بولندا حالياً). ونتيجة لتهديده بالاعتقال بسبب ميوله الاشتراكية، هرب من البلاد عام 1888م قبيل تسلُّمه درجة الدكتوراه من جامعة برسلاو، وانتقل للولايات المتحدة عام 1889م حيث درس الهندسة الكهربائية في كلية الاتحاد في سكنكتدي، نيويورك. وكتب عدة كتب في نظرية الهندسة الكهربائية. شغل شتاينمتز أيضًا منصبًا سياسيًا في سكنكتدي كاشتراكي.

وطَّد شتاينمتز سمعته في المجتمع الهندسي الأمريكي عام 1892م، حيث وضع صيغة لحساب فقد البقاء وهو تأثير مغنطيسي خاص بالتيار المتناوب. وبعد فترة وجيزة، قدمت له الدعوة للالتحاق بشركة جنرال إلكتريك بمجرد إنشائها، حيث قضى بقية حياته العملية في البحوث الكهربائية. وكان معمله المنزلي الذي موَّلته الشركة مسرحًا لكثير من الاكتشافات والاختراعات التجريبية.
