حديقة حيوان
حديقة الحيوانات (أو حَيْر الحيوان أو حَيْر الحيوان)، هي منشأة بها حيوانات موضوعة داخل أقفاص أو في مساحة مفتوحة محاطة بأسوار، ويتم الاعتناء بها، وعرضها للجمهور، وفي بعض الحالات تُربى لأغراض الحفاظ.
يشير مصطلح (zoological garden/حديقة الحيوان) إلى علم الحيوان، المعني بدراسة الحيوانات. المصطلح مشتق من اليونانية ζώον، zoon، "حيوان"، واللاحقة -λογία، -logia، "دراسة". أستخدم الاختصار "zoo" لأول مرة للإشارة إلى حديقة حيوان لندن، والتي أُفتتحت للدراسة العلمية عام 1828 وللعامة في عام 1847.[1]
في الولايات المتحدة وحدها، يزور حدائق الحيوان أكثر من 181 مليون شخص سنويًا.[2]

البدايات
كانت حديقة حيوان لندن، التي أُفتتحت عام 1828، تُعرف في البداية باسم "حدائق ومعرض الحيوانات في جمعية علم الحيوان في لندن"، ووصفت نفسها بأنها حديقة حيوان أو "غابة حيوانية".[3]
ظهر الاختصار "حديقة الحيوان" لأول مرة في الصحافة بالمملكة المتحدة حوالي عام 1847، عندما تم استخدامه للإشارة إلى حديقة حيوان كليفتون، لكن لم يصبح الشكل المختصر شائعًا إلا بعد حوالي 20 عامًا مع ظهور أغنية "المشي في حديقة الحيوانات" لفنان قاعة الموسيقى ألفريد ڤانس.[3]
أستخدم مصطلح "حديقة الحيوان" للإشارة إلى مرافق أكثر اتساعًا في هاليفاكس، نوڤا سكوشا، واشنطن العاصمة، وبرونكس في نيويورك، الذين افتتحوا في 1847 و1891 و1899 على التوالي.[4]
المصطلحات الجديدة نسبيًا لحدائق الحيوان في أواخر القرن العشرين هي "حديقة الحفاظ" أو "منتزه حيوي". اعتماد اسم جديد هو استراتيجية يستخدمها بعض محترفي حدائق الحيوان لإبعاد مؤسساتهم عن الصورة النمطية والتي تنتقد في الوقت الحاضر مفهوم حديقة الحيوان في القرن التاسع عشر.[5]
تمت صياغة مصطلح "متنزه حيوي" وتطويره لأول مرة بواسطة حديقة الحيوانات الوطنية في واشنطن العاصمة في أواخر الثمانينيات

في عام 1993، غيرت جمعية نيويورك لعلم الحيوان اسمها إلى جمعية المحافظة على الحياة البرية وأعادت تسمية حدائق الحيوان الواقعة تحت سلطتها باسم "متنزهات الحفاظ على الحياة البرية".[7]
