إثل‌رد غير المستعد Æthelred the Unready، أو إثل‌رد الثاني (و. 968 – 23 أبريل 1016)، كان ملك إنگلترة (978–1013 و1014–1016). وهو ابن الملك إدگار والملكة إلفثريث. كان إثل‌رد في العاشرة (لا يزيد عن الثالثة عشر) عندما قُتل أخيه غير الشقيق إدوارد. ولم يكن إثل‌رد مشتبه به شخصياً في قتل شقيقه، لكن أدين كقاتل من قُبل شهود الملكة إلفثيريث في قلعة كورف، مما جعل الصعوبات التي واجهها الملك الجديد في حشد الأمة ضد الغارات العسكرية التي شنها الدانز، خاصة بعدما انتشرت أسطورة القديس إدوارد الشهيد.

واصل الإسكنديناويين هجومهم على إنجلترا في أواخر القرن العاشر، فأغارت قوة من الفيكنج (القراصنة النرويجيين) بقيادة أولاف تريجفسون Olaf Tryggvsson على سواحل إنجلترا في عام 991. وعجز الإنجليز بقيادة الملك إثلرد (987-1013) (الملقب بردلس Redeless أي غير المنتصح لأنه أبى أن يعمل بمشورة أعيان البلاد) فنفح الغزاة برشا سخية متتابعة 10.000، 16.000، 24.000، 36.000، 48.000، رطل من الفضة جمعها دينجلد Danegeld المخرب الوقح من أول ضريبة عامة فرضت على إنجلترا.

وسعى إثلرد لكسب المعونة الأجنبية فشرع يفاوض نورمندية في عقد حلف معه، وتزوج إما Emma ابنة رتشارد الأول دوق نورمندية، ونشأت من هذا الزواج أحداث خطيرة وأدعى إثلرد أن الدنمرقيين يأتمرون به ليقتلوه، ويقضوا على برلمان الأمة الويتناجمور Witenagemor فأمر بقتل كافة من في الجزيرة من الدنمرقيين أينما وجدوا (1002). ولسنا نعلم إلى أي حد نفذ هذا الأمر بحذافيره، وأكبر الظن أن جميع من كانوا في إنجلترا من الذكور القادرين على حمل السلاح قد قتلوهم وبعض النساء، وكان من بين من قتلن منهن أخت سوين Sweyn ملك الدنمرقة، وأقسم سوين أن يثأر لمقتلهما، فغزا في إنجلترا في عام 1003، وأعاد الكرّة عليها بجميع قواه في عام 1013. وتخلى نبلاء إثلرد عنه، ففر إلى نورمندية، وأصبح سوين ملك إنجلترا وسيدها. غير إن إثلرد عاد إلى الكفاح بعد موت سوين (1014)، وتخلى عن الأعيان مرة أخرى، وعقدوا الصلح مع كنوت Cnut بن سوين (1015). ومات إثلرد في لندن وهي محاصرة، وحارب إدمند ذو الجانب الحديدي Edmund Ironside ببسالة ولكن كنوت تغلب عليه عند أسندون Assandun (1016). وارتضت إنجلترا بأجمعها كنوت ملكاً عليها، وتم بذلك للدنمرقيين فتح إنجلترا.
