إلبردج جري ( /ˈɡɛri/ (17 يوليو 1744_23 نوفمبر 1814) كان الأب المؤسس الأمريكي والتاجر والسياسي والدبلوماسي الذي شغل منصب نائب رئيس الولايات المتحدة الخامس في عهد الرئيس جيمس ماديسون من عام 1813 حتى وفاته عام 1814. سميت الممارسة السياسية لـ gerrymandering من بعده. كان ثاني نائب رئيس يتوفى في منصبه.

ولد جري في عائلة تجارية ثرية، وعارض السياسة الاستعمارية البريطانية في ستينيات القرن التاسع عشر ونشط في المراحل الأولى من تنظيم المقاومة في الحرب الثورية الأمريكية. بعد انتخابه لعضوية الكونگرس القاري الثاني، وقع جري كلاً من إعلان الاستقلال وبنود الكونفدرالية. كان أحد ثلاثة رجال حضروا المؤتمر الدستوري عام 1787 الذين رفضوا التوقيع على دستور الولايات المتحدة لأنه لم يتضمن وثيقة الحقوق وقت التوقيع عليها. بعد التصديق عليها، تم انتخابه لعضوية الكونگرس الأمريكي الافتتاحية، حيث شارك بنشاط في صياغة وتمرير ميثاق الحقوق كمدافع عن الحريات الفردية وحريات الدولة.

عارض جري في البداية فكرة الأحزاب السياسية وأقام صداقات دائمة على جانبي الانقسام السياسي بين الفدراليين و الجمهوريين الديمقراطيين. كان عضوًا في وفد دبلوماسي إلى فرنسا تمت معاملته بشكل سيئ في قضية XYZ، حيث حمله الفدراليون مسؤولية انهيار المفاوضات. أصبح جري بعد ذلك جمهوريًا ديمقراطيًا، حيث ترشح دون جدوى ل حاكم ولاية ماساتشوستس عدة مرات قبل أن يفوز بالمنصب في عام 1810.

خلال فترة ولايته الثانية، وافق المجلس التشريعي على مناطق مجلس الشيوخ الجديدة التي أدت إلى صياغة كلمة "gerrymander"؛ خسر الانتخابات التالية، على الرغم من أن مجلس الشيوخ ظل ديمقراطيًا - جمهوريًا. تم ترشيح جيري من قبل الحزب الديمقراطي الجمهوري وانتخب نائبًا للرئيس في انتخابات 1812.

The word "gerrymander" (originally written "Gerry-mander") was used for the first time in the Boston Gazette newspaper on March 26, 1812. Appearing with the term, and helping spread and sustain its popularity, was this political cartoon, which depicts a state senate district in Essex County as a strange animal with claws, wings and a dragon-type head, satirizing the district's odd shape.

Gerry had ten children, of whom nine survived into adulthood:
