الحجر الرملي Sandstone نوع من الصخور تتكون أساسًا من رمال التصقت بعضها ببعض عن طريق الضغط أو بواسطة المعادن. ويحتوي الرمل عادة على المرو والفلسبار ومعادن أخرى. ويحتوي أيضًا على مواد عضوية وأجزاء من الصخور. وتشمل المعادن التي تؤدي إلى التصاق حبات الرمل المرو والبيرايت والكلسيت. ويتراوح لون الحجر الرملي بين الأصفر الباهت والرمادي والأحمر والأسمر والأخضر. ويتحدد لونه وفقا لدرجة وجود الإسمنت والمواد الأخرى غير النقية في الرمل.

Sandstones fall into several major groups based on their mineralogy and texture.

• quartz arenites are made up almost entirely of quartz grains, usually well sorted and rounded. These pure quartz sands result from extensive weathering that occurred before and during transport and removed everything but quartz, the most stable mineral.

وهو سهل في معالجته، واستخدامه، ويستعمل في الأغراض نفسها التي يستخدم فيها الحجر الجيري. وربما يعتبر الحجر الرملي، المملَّط جيدًا بالسليكا أكثر متانة ومقاومة لظروف الطقس عند مقارنته بمعظم حجارة البناء الأخرى.

وكان الحجر الرملي من مواد البناء المعروفة في المباني الكبيرة قبل استخدام الإسمنت والخرسانة المتينة في منتصف القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي.
