جون مونتاگو، إيرل ساندويتش الرابع John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich ‏PC, FRS (13 نوفمبر 1718 – 30 أبريل 1792)، دبلوماسي ورجل دولة ومخترع ومستكشف بريطاني، والذي على اسمه أُطلق اسم الساندويتش الذي اخترعه في 1762. وتقول القصة المعطاة في "جولة گورسلي إلى لندن" أن ساندويتش كان ينفق وقتاً طويلاً في القمار ولم يكن يرغب في مغادرة طاولة القمار، لذلك فقد أمر الخدم أن يحضروا له لحماً بين شريحتين من الخبز. وبالرغم من أن تلك القصة انتشرت، إلا أن يعوزها الدليل. يصف رودجر، كاتب سيرة ساندويتش، الشكل الأصلي باستخدام اللحم البقري المملح، إذ أنه الأكثر احتمالاً فقد اُختُرِع قبيل ذلك، وأمر بإحضاره إلى مكتبه الذي كان يقضي ساعات طوال في العمل عليه.

The Duke of Bedford was a long-standing patron of Sandwich, and his support helped him further his career.

In The State Tinkers (1780), James Gillray caricatured Sandwich (on left) and his political allies in the North government as incompetent tinkers.

Sandwich was Postmaster General from 1768 to 1771 and briefly Secretary of State again from December 1770 to January 1771.

• 1771–1782 Third and last term as First Lord of the Admiralty of Great Britain (during this term: the American Revolutionary War, 1775–1783)
• 1779 His mistress Martha Ray, mother of five of his children, murdered by her admirer James Hackman in Covent Garden
