المحيط الأيبتوسي

المحيط الأيبتوسي Iapetus Ocean، يطلق على المحيط الأطلنطي الابتدائي Proto-Altantic، والذي كان موجودا في بداية العصر الكمبري في حقبة الحياة القديمة المبكرة، والذي أغلق أثناء حقبة الحياة القديمة، بسبب تقارب الألواح الحاملة لقارات لورانتيا Laurentia (شمال شرق أمريكا الشمالية وجرينلاند) وقارة البلطيق Baltica (غرب أوروبا) وجندوانا Gondwana.

Position of the continents after the Caledonian orogeny (Devonian to Permian times). Differences in fossil faunas on both sides of the red line (the Iapetus Suture) are evidence for the existence of an ocean between the two sides in the time before the continents were joined in the supercontinent Pangaea.
