زپلين Zeppelin ، هو منطاد صلب، اخترعه الألماني الكونت فرديناند فون زپلين في أوائل القرن العشرين .وحصل على براءة اختراع في الولايات المتحدة في 14 مارس 1899. ونظرا للنجاح المتميز في تصميم هذا المنطاد ، استخدم اسم زپلين كمصطلح على جميع المناطيد الصارمة . استخدم زپلين في الحرب العالمية الأولى ، وأصابته نيران معادية مما أدى إلى هبوطه معزولا جنوب أوستند.

احتراق المنطاط هيندنبرگ 1937

في مايو 1937، أثناء الإبرار في لكهورست، بعد رحلة عبر الأطلسي، شبنت النيران في ذيل المنطاد، وفي غضون ثواني، احترق المنطاد هيندنبرگ، مما أسفر عن مقتل 35 شخص وإصابة 97 وواحداً من طاقمه. لم يُعرف سبب الحريق على وجه التحديد. توصل التحقيق حول الحادث إلى أن الكهرباء الستاتيكية قد أشعلت الهيدروجين الذي تسرب من أكياس الغاز، على الرغم من وجود مزاعم بعملية تخريب. راح ضحية الحادث 13 من ركاب المنطاد و22 من أفراد الطاقم، ومن بينهم إرنست ليمان.[1]

على الرغم من خطورة الحادث، إلا أنه هناك قائمة من 400 شخص كانوا لا زالوا يريدون التحليق على متن المنطاد زپلن ودفعوا ثمن الرحلة. أعيدت الأموال لهؤلاء الأشخاص عام 1940.
