درس الطب في جامعة كوپنهاگن وتخرج سنة 1944. حصل على الدكتوراه سنة 1954 في معهد الفيزيولوجيا بجامعة آرهوس وأصبح بروفسور فيزيولوجيا فيها سنة 1963.
حصل على جائزة نوبل في الكيمياء لسنة 1997 .
