وُلد نيلسن في ريجاينا، سسكاتشوان. بعد انتهاءه دراسته الثانوية، التحق بالقوات الجوية الملكية الكندية عام 1943[2] وخدم حتى نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية.[3] بعد تسريحه من الجيش، عمله نيلسون كمنسق موسيقي قبل حصوله على منحة لدراسة المسرح في Neighborhood Playhouse. بدأت نجوميته عام 1950، حيث ظهر في 46 برنامجًا تلفزيونيًا مباشرًا سنويًا. ظهر نيلسن في السينما لأول مرة عام 1956، بأدوار داعمة في العديد من الأعمال الدرامية والأفلام الغربية والرومانسية التي تم إنتاجها بين الخمسينيات والسبعينيات.

وُلد نيلسن في 11 فبراير 1926 في ريجاينا، سسكاتشوان.[10] والدته، مابل إليزابث (اسمها قبل الزواج ديڤز)، كانت مهاجرة من ويلز، أما والده، إنگڤارد إيڤرسن نيلسن (1900-1975)، كان شرطياً دنماركي-المولد في شرطة الخيالة الملكية الكندية.[11][12][13] كان نيلسن الابن الثاني في العائلة. أخاه الأكبر، إريك نيلسن (1924–2008)، كان عضواً مخضرماً في البرلمان الكندي، وزيراً في الحكومة، ونائب رئيس وزراء كندا من 1984 حتى 1986.[14] وكان لديه أيضاً أخ غير شقيق، گلبرت نيلسن.[15]
