Observatory of Vilnius University, Lithuania. Seen in 2006. One can see two Latin inscriptions here. The first one is: "ADDIDIT ANTIQUO VIRTUS NOVA LUMINA CŒLO". It is said, that this phrase is from verses by Virgil, however, exact place of this phrase in his works should be pointed out. The second is an inscription by M. Poczobutt: "Hæc Domus Uraniæ est: curæ procul este profanæ: Temnitur hic humilis tellus: hinc ITUR AD ASTRA". The last words of this phrase, "Hinc itur ad astra", became the motto of Vilnius University. |
