In giving these Recollections and Impressions tothe public, I feel some sort of explanation is due,—and the explanation is, that they were writtenat long intervals during the last four or fiveyears, entirely for my grandchildren, and aretherefore of a more domestic character than ifa larger audience had been anticipated. I havenever kept a diary, and am conscious that whatI have written is often very desultory, and atall times it is difficult to keep reminiscencesfrom being a dry catalogue of names. Had Ieven suppressed the personal note, the sketchesof well-known people who came into our lifemight appear too like detached portraits, lackinga frame.
