The large black seeds of Jatropha curcas (right, used to process biodiesel) compared with the much smaller seeds of a close relative from Mozambique, Jatropha scaposa. Note the large caruncle on the seed of J.scaposa, probably related to the spread of the seeds by ants. Within the genus Jatropha (about 170 species), both species belong to the same section Curcas and can be crossed when J. scaposa is used as the female parent (see my Set: Jatropha scaposa x curcas). Advantages to be expected from this combination for the biodiesel industry: improved adaptation to drought and heat and decreased plant size with reduced basal branching (improved suitability for mechanical harvesting). |
