I am naturally very fond of children, but I discov-ered to my great surprise that wherever I appeared on the streetthe children hurried away, stopping their play, ceasing theirmerry laughter, while they sought shelter in the doors andalleys. A tall boy about ten years old, who had the courage tostare at me in daring proximity, was taken into the house by hisanxious mother. Polish, Bohemian and Italian women crossedthemselves solemnly whenever I passed them during my stay inthat locality. Later on I heard that I was used as a bug-a-booby the worthy mothers; when the little children preferred tocry evenings instead of sleeping, they -were told to be quiet,otherwise Sextus would be called.
