English: The arms were granted on May 9, 1955. The fleur-de-lis are taken from the old seals of the city of Erkelenz, which represent the Maria-abbey in Aachen. The abbey granted in 966 Emperor Otto I grounds in the county. Later the area belonged to Geldern, see the city Erkelenz. The flax flower in the centre of the arms reminds of the fact that the city already in the 12th century was an important trading centre for flax and linen.
Deutsch: "In Gold ein rotes lateinisches Lilienkreuz, in dessen Mitte eine fünfblättrige, blaue Flachsblüte."
Die Lilie entstammt einem Erkelenzer Stadtsiegel von 1551 und erinnert an die Beziehung der Stadt Erkelenz zum Marienstift Aachen. Die Flachsblüte weist auf den früheren Flachsanbau hin, der vor allem im nördlichen Kreisgebiet betrieben wurde. Das Gold im Wappenschild steht für die Fruchtbarkeit des Lößbodens des südlichen Kreisgebietes.
