وينجم هذا المرض عادةً عن عدوى من بكتيريا تُدعى العنقودية الذهبية. ويُمكن أن تحدث إصابة نقْي العظام إذا أُصيب الإنسان بكسر مركب. ففي مثل هذه الكسور، يُمكن أن يتعرض نقي العظام للهواء الحاوي على الجراثيم. وفي حالات أخرى، ينقل الدم الجراثيم من دُمّل، أو من لوزتين مصابتين، أو من أي مصدر آخر للخَمج في الجسم، إلى نِقي العظم.
الأعراض
وتشمل أعراض التهاب العظام الحاد الحمى، والقشعريرة، وألم العظم المصاب، والغثيان. ويعالج الأطباء الإصابة عادة بالمضادات الحيوية. وقد يكون النّزح الجراحي ضروريًا أحيانًا. والتأخر في معالجة التهاب العظام يمكن أن يؤدي إلى قِصَر العظم، وإلى حدوث تشوه فيه.
